Class Outlines
For Spring 2010

Below is the schedule of classes. Reservations are on a first come basis and there are only 6 openings per class. To reserve space, call Merrill Rosenberg at 781-830-7907 or contact your ARTCO Representative. These classes are offered at no charge. Directions to our plant are available here.

Prepress                                                               4/15/10                                                 9:30 AM - 11:00AM
Shawn Hunter will discuss Quark, Photoshop, IN Design, Illustrator, Freehand, Quark color palate, fonts, graphics, DPI, hairlines, clipping paths, direct to plate, proofing, and have a question and answer session. He will take group on a tour of Prepress Dept.

Press                                                                    4/20/10                                                  9:30AM - 11:00 AM
Bill Mc Dole will give group a tour of the Press and Ink Dept. while the presses are running. He will discuss how and why offset printing works, plates, imposition, ink and water trains, PMS colors, ink mixing and color matching, setting and drying of ink, coatings and ghosting. There will be a question and answer period.

Bindery                                                                  4/8/10                                                   9:30AM – 11:00AM
Joe Kurtzer will discuss imposition and how it effects bindery, scoring and folding, perforating, saddle stitch binding, loop stitch, glue binding, perfect binding, lay flat, wire-o, spiral, plastic comb, sewn, and case bound books. He will also discuss die cutting, embossing, debossing, register embossing, foil stamping and numbering. There will be a question and answer period.

Mailing                                                                  4/29/10                                                  9:30AM – 11:00AM
Jim Viola will tour mailing dept. He will discuss new USPS regulations (move update and flat address placement) and postal increases on profit and non-profit mail, do’s and don’ts, CASS certifying, NCOA, deduping, indicia’s, mail entry points, tabbing, match mailings, and rate saving ideas.

Data Processing and Mail List Management        4/22/10                                                  9:30 AM – 11:00AM
Jim Hamilton will go over list preparation, list management, merge/purge, list suppression, bar coding and personalization. He will cover simplex and duplex laser projects and match mailings.

Indigo and Variable Data                                     4/13/10                                                  9:30AM – 11:00AM
Merrill Rosenberg will go over the capabilities and products that can be produced on the Indigo press. When should you print a job digital versus offset? What proofs can you expect? When and how variable data can be used.

Paper                                                                    4/1/10                                                    9:30AM – 11:00AM
Merrill Rosenberg will discuss how paper is made and the properties that are controlled in the papermaking process. He will discuss how the characteristics of the paper you select will affect your print quality and finishing. There will be a question and answer period.
